Caring for Children with Additional Needs

At Bright Stars, we have suitable knowledge and provision in caring for a child with additional needs and will seek advice from parents as to the best approach in supporting their needs. With parental permission, it may be appropriate to share any information parents provide with other agencies such as the child’s teacher and the local authority special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO). If necessary, we will ask our local authority for extra training, which will enable us to care for your child in the best possible way.

Physical disabilities

With this type of additional need, we would need to assess the disability to ascertain if our setting has suitable access for the child, if there would be any hindrance in the layout of rooms, and whether we could give adequate access to toilet and washing facilities. Consideration must be given to transportation and whether your child could be carried in a comfortable manner. Consideration also needs to be given to the ages of other children in our care.

Special dietary requirements or medicinal needs

We should be shown any specific medications, exercises and be told of any special dietary requirements before contracts are signed. Any special diets that exclude ‘normal day to day foods’ we would ask that you supply food for your child if necessary.
